Ghost in the Shell whitewashing continues to fuel online backlash

Hollywood still is not learning its lesson when it comes to whitewashing and yellow face. A new photo released today shows Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi in the upcoming adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, sparking Ming-Na Wen and many others to speak out online. This isn’t even the first example of Hollywood whitewashing this week. Cough cough Marvel.

In fact, when I saw Khan was whitewashed in STID, I do feel angry, but not angry like *this*. I didn’t know much about Ghost in the shell but I’m sure it was great, I do love SJo, I guess the movie would be interesting - however, well, call me *narrowed* one: I don’t want to see a white beautiful woman playing an Asian woman character, pretending her skin, her black eyes and hair, and her *Asian* or *Japanese* culture heritage meant NOTHING to the whole story, to the world.

Ghost in the shell might not be a very much Asian or a Japanese story, I know very well why Hollywood do this, the *rational* part in my brain could find a good reason for’em. However, so many beautiful, talented actress worked in Hollywood everyday, I always hoped they could have a chance to play such a significant role.

And I don’t like to see people make a white character black too. It was as stupid as whitewashing.

The Punisher staring Dolph Lundgren - 25 year old article about the making of the movie.  To give you an idea of just how big a deal this movie was at the time, it is the second feature story in this magazine - right behind Batman (AKA the biggest movie of the year).  That means the editors chose to feature this movie ahead of other heavy hitters like Indiana Jones, Lethal Weapon, James Bond, and stories about Sylvester Stallone and Clint Eastwood.

In the end, the movie flopped, but at the time, the idea of a Punisher movie was a dream come true.

All-Star Action Heroes #1 (1989)

I guess he would be a better Frank now if he is going to play. I mean it.

Now this is the way the Punisher should be.

“I wanted to make a fan film for a character I’ve always loved and believed in - a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It’s been a blast to be a part of from start to finish — we hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.” — Thomas Jane
